Atlanta Event Overview 2014

large group picture

What an amazing time we had at the 3rd Miles for Freedom Atlanta on the Silver Comet Trail on April 26, 2014.  The weather was absolutely perfect with a low of 55 and a high of 81 with no wind or clouds.  This year we had a last-minute change in the start/finish line due to construction taking place on the bridges in Cobb County.  We started at mile marker 11.7 at the Florence Rd. Trail-head and 45 participants skated, biked, walked and ran a total of 2.7, 7.2, or 27 miles.  After an awareness message and thank you from Nia of Wellspring Living and Gentry of Miles for Freedom, Jimmy Blair II, Pro skater and owner of Pinnacle Racing, lead us in prayer for the survivors and participants.

We are thankful for the volunteers that were stationed near the half way points for each category and gave out food and drink.  Many of the participants were surprised to see a wall of people taking over the trail about 5 miles into the event because a 5k in Dallas, GA got a late start. Thankfully, nobody was hurt and it ended up giving us a wonderful way to continue our mission to bring AWARENESS.  The police officer for the 5k  stopped Gentry’s Dad at Rambo Nursery and asked what is Miles for Freedom and why are they all wearing the number 27,000,000?  That was the question many times throughout the day.  We got to tell people that we are coming together as one team to fight for the estimated 27 million people in the World that are trapped in Human Trafficking.

For many participants this was their first time completing 2.7, 7.2, or 27 miles.  The event was physically painful for most of us as well.  We hope that our pain in sport will give us an extra reminder for those that are suffering in the pain of human trafficking.  That it will provide an opportunity to cry out in prayer for the pain of the millions that are suffering in the U.S and around the World.

Another part of the mission of Miles for Freedom is to provide FUNDING for ministries that support the restoration and freedom of people.  With the help of  God, prayer, volunteers, participants, and sponsors we raised a total of $1,967 for Wellspring Living.  That will provide hope, love, trust, faith, therapy, housing, clothing, transportation, medicine, prison outreach and many more things for the women and girls that are served by Wellspring.

We are so grateful for all of you that are reading this and that have joined us in this fight for freedom.   Please enjoy a few pictures from Miles for Freedom Atlanta below. You may also join the conversation and get involved on

May 31 and October 4, 2014 we will have events in Dayton, OH to provide furniture for a new residential program of Oasis House for survivors of Sex Trafficking.  For more details visit 2014 Events/Expos

Spring is Coming!

We are gearing up for two spring events to bring awareness and funding to Wellspring Living and Oasis House. One volunteer has even created a Facebook Event page for her birthday to support Miles for Freedom cause in Dayton! Together we can make a difference to the individuals we are fighting for. Sex trafficking is a darkness that must be prayed against and have people like you that are fighting with talent and money.

A story I read recently is hard to type because it is so disgusting and graphic. However, I must make you aware so that our disgust will turn to action.

This women was taken by a pimp and forced into servicing 10-20 men and women a night. That is bad enough, but when she tried to escape she was rapped with a hot curling iron. It saddens my heart to hear this. I can’t imagine how many counseling sessions she must go to now that she has escaped. What do her prayers sound like as she weeps to God? How many times will she have to visit the doctor for updates and check ups? How many loving social workers will it take to tell her she is worthy before she believes it for herself? How many bus passes will it take for job interviews before she is hired?

That is why recovery cost money after the rescue. If you were to meet “Amanda” face to face and hear her struggle would you pay towards a doctors bill or bus pass? Would you pay for a counseling session? I know we all need money, but I plea with you to help fund and pray for the “Amanda’s” and “Jamal’s” that are in recovery.

You may give to Wellspring and Oasis at Donation link. Please type Wellspring Living in the comments if you want donation to go there. Thank you for your genorisity and prayers.

Our goal is $5,000 for Wellspring and $10,000 for Oasis House.

We have many new sponsors! Checkout a preview of the back of our shirt with current Sponsors.

Miles for Freedom
Miles for Freedom

In 2013 we had all types of people come out in support. Gem City Derby Girls and guys came out in full derby gear to complete 7.2 miles. One pastor from Apex Community Church, Jason Wing, encouraged 30 people to walk/run 2.4 miles totaling 72 miles. Another youth group walked silently in solemn memory of the 27 million. Pro Inline Skaters from GA, Ohio and Indiana participated in the full 72 distance in rainy cold conditions. Other participants combined sports to challenge their bodies to go the maximum distance. One lady even came from Alaska to cycle the 72 miles! It’s up to you how many miles your team completes. The point is to take a stand for freedom while raising awareness and funds for those who have limited freedoms.

2013 Results (72 Mile events)

72 Miles… becomes Miles for Freedom

MilesForFreedom_jpeg

New name same great cause!

Changing the name to Miles for Freedom is our way to include more people in the mission to bring awareness and funding to ministries that support the restoration and freedom of people. 72 was the number of miles Gentry was called to complete for the estimated 27 million trapped in human slavery, but we have always had people joining the cause with the number of miles they felt compelled to complete. Our hope is that you will not be intimidated by a number of miles rather be encouraged to join our adventure to free people from bondage.

UPDATING BLOG NOV. 16-20

Forgive us for not updating on the blog. People really were more interested in short updates on Facebook and Twitter.  So for now check us out at Facebook and Twitter or see a preview of status updates to the left of this page.

IN SHORT WE WILL HAVE EVENTS IN ATLANTA AND DAYTON IN 2014 and they will support Wellspring Living in Atlanta and Oasis House in Dayton, Ohio.

Great job Atlanta Participants!

Together we have raised $2,200 for the Atlanta causes!! The two causes were Wellspring Living and Christ for the City International in Costa Rica.  The March 23rd group ride had 47 people registered and many volunteers and fundraisers involved.  Thank you to Rollerblade and Pinnacle Racing for the main sponsorships and promotion.  The day of the group ride there were storms, but 30 people signed in and picked up T-Shirts.  20 people completed some portion of the 72 miles and some completed the miles on indoor trainers, treadmills or on the Saturday following the event.  I am very thankful for your participation and support.  Please stay tuned to our Facebook page and this blog for more updates and events.  On April 6, 2013 we will have our second 72 Miles for Freedom of the year in Dayton, Ohio.  We are looking forward to providing furniture for the first residential program of Oasis House in Dayton.  This new home is for women who have been rescued from prostitution and human trafficking and will provide a safe place for the women to be restored and grow as women.  The Dayton group ride will also support the ministry of Christ for the City International in Costa Rica.  The outreach in Costa Rica is about prevention.  The neighborhood is an immigrant community that has been in a uphill battle for years.  The teens growing up  in La Carpio are targeted by gang leaders and pimps who are looking to make money off teens and children that are looking to survive the streets.  The skateboard and soccer park is a private gated facility  that uses sport as a way to keep the kids off the streets.  As the kids come into the sports program they learn leadership skills and receive mentoring.  What an honor and privilege we have to help prevent someone from becoming a victim or from being groomed to be a prostitute or pimp.  The money that we are raising for Christ for the City will be used to update the existing skatepark.  We are looking to host a skateboard competition that will invite the surrounding community and give the kids prizes.

Stay tuned for the next blog Monday Night that will have the Dayton, Ohio April 6th Logistics!

  • THE EVENT

We will be inline skating cycling, walking, running, long boarding, etc. to raise money for Oasis House in Dayton and build a skate park for Christ for The City International in Costa Rica. This is not a timed race/event. It’s a relaxing group ride.

The full 72 mile ride will start at Eastwood MetroPark Creekside Bike Path go towards BeaverCreek Station, at Xenia Station continue on Ohio-Eerie Trail towards halfway turn around point in South Charleston.

You DO NOT HAVE TO COMPLETE 72 MILES! For example, you may decide to have a group of 10 walk/run/bike/skate 7.2 miles totaling 72 miles. Another option is to complete 27 miles for the 27 million. It’s up to you how many miles your team completes.

Water, restrooms and Snack Booths will be available at Eastwood MetroPark, Beavercreek Station, Xenia Station, Cedarville, and South Charleston. The bike path averages a 2% grade, which makes it flat most of the way along with the occasional hill. The entire ride is paved.

  • WHY 72 MILES?
  • The mission of 72 Miles for Freedom is to bring awareness and funding to ministries that support the restoration and freedom of people. We will use the event as a platform for others to become involved in a tangible and sacrificial way. Our pain in sport and giving will be for a purpose. To see broken walls rebuilt.

The inspiration came from the Passion City Church Good Friday gathering in 2012. That night we were introduced to Julia Immonen who had just completed rowing a boat across the Atlantic Ocean to raise awareness for human trafficking. Through my involvement at Passion I have become aware of the 27 million slaves that are in the World today. When Julia started talking about rowing for freedom she said, “You don’t have to row just do what you’re good at.” For me I’m good at inline skating her inspiration put a dream in me to skate for freedom. My first thought was to represent 27 million slaves with a 27 mile group ride, but then God said why don’t you go further? Why not go 72 miles? I knew that if I could skate 10 or 27 miles on my own will that God would give me the strength to train for 72 miles.

Affecting Community Tranformation- AKA “Oasis House” was chosen because they are local to Dayton, Ohio and are in process of building a home for women where restoration will take place. Money will help furnish the new home that will open in June 2013!(Goal $7,200)

Christ for the City International Costa Rica is a skateboard outreach that gives kids a safe place away from drug dealers and gang leaders to skateboard, bmx, play soccer, learn leadership skills , and discipleship. If you choose to donate to this ministry the money will be used to build a new skatepark with the help of the local kids.

(Goal $2,800)

Event schedule and times

Check in- 8:00 A.M

STARTS- 8:30 A.M

Although we will have several people completing separate distances and sports we will not time each event. The Trail has mileage markers that you can track your distances and keep your own time. In doing so we will be able to save more money to donate to the causes.

The mission of 72 Miles for Freedom is to bring awareness and funding to ministries that support the restoration and freedom of people.  We will use the event as a platform for others to become involved in a tangible and sacrificial way.  Our pain in sport and giving will be for a purpose.  To see broken walls rebuilt.

72 Miles 4 Freedom- Latin America

I have just got back from Costa Rica on a missions trip and had the opportunity to learn about a skate outreach.  It seems fitting for it to be in Costa Rica since this is my 5th trip back to the beautiful country.  The place where La Carpio skatepark is located is a community of Nicaraguan immigrants.  While we were there police helicopters were overhead scouting the area for crime. However, the skate and soccer fields are a private ministry away from the crime of the streets.   They also offer photography, computer, video editing, and a medical clinic.  The goal is at least $2800 to raise enough funds to bring a team of skaters from the U.S and build new ramps with the local skaters involvement.

This will be the place that 72 Miles for Freedom will focus on as its second ministry to adopt for 2013.  The first focus will continue to be Wellspring Living.  Again the 72 Miles for Freedom fundraiser will be held in March 2013.  We will have an opportunity for you to create a team and fundraising goal for your teams in the coming months.  For example the “Inline Team” the “7.2 walkers team” the “half marathon runners team” “Longboarding team” etc.

Please click on the Contact Page if you would like me to share the vision for 2013 at your group meeting, youth group, church, etc
Stay tuned to this blog and https://twitter.com/72Miles4Freedom for updates!!!

What’s Next for our 72 Mile Adventure?

May 26, 2012 we had 51 participants and $1,150 donated for our first 72 Miles for Freedom group ride.

We are now in phase two of our journey! March 23, 2013 our second 72 Mile adventure will take place on the Silver Comet Trail. (Registration now open online)

They will rebuild the ancient ruins
and restore the places long devastated;
they will renew the ruined cities
that have been devastated for generations. Isaiah 61:4

The event will continue to allow skaters, bikers, walkers, runners and other athletes to join in all or part of the 72 Miles.  For example, you may decide to have a group of 10 walk/run 7.2 miles totaling 72 miles.  Another option is to complete 27 miles for the 27 million.  A bus will be available at mile 36 to bring people back to the start. It’s up to you how many miles your team completes.  The point is to take a stand for freedom while raising awareness and funds for those who have limited freedoms.

In 2013 we will support Wellspring Living and a Skate Park ministry in Latin America that rescues and restores teens from street life by giving them a safe place to skate.   Registration details will be available in the coming months at Active.com.  Throughout the year 72 mile participants will share the vision of restoration and freedom with others at sporting events, schools, conferences, churches and businesses.

The Miles for Freedom podcast brings adventure, sport, and awareness to see people freed from slavery. In a world where 27 million people are trapped in human trafficking we want to bring a series of interviews that will inform, inspire, and influence you to move for freedom.

We will inform you with stories from freedom fighters who are leading movements and organizations. Stories like that of Cheryl Oliver who left the finance world to help free women from the sex industry in Dayton, Ohio. This podcast will bring inspiration from people like Julia Immonen who have used sport and adventure to fight trafficking. Most importantly this series will influence you to ask the question “How can I move for freedom?”

EPISODE 2: BIKE THROUGH TRAFFIC INTERVIEW

EPISODE DESCRIPTION
Today we will interview Daniel Lemke who is the founder of Break The Cycle. The nonprofit is raising awareness of mondern day slavery, specifically Sex Trafficking in America. One of the ways they are doing this is with a cycling tour around the United States called “Bike Through Traffic.” Daniel started cycling from Colorado in April of 2015 and will complete the awareness campaign after 12,000 miles of riding on July 16, 2016. Along the way he will be speaking at mens groups, churches, schools, youth groups, and other venues. He plans to ride 50 miles a day, burning 3000 to 5000 calaries each day! At the time of this interview Daniel was traveling north from Naples, Florida to Atlanta. As you will hear in the interview one of the most important principals of launching a new non-profit is knowing your “Why?” Knowing why your are doing something that seems impossilbe to others is the difference between a dream that succeeds and a dream that fails. Throughout today’s conversation you will understand why it is so important to Daniel that he keeps pedaling. My hope is that his inspiration will inspire you to move for freedom.
